I have about 75 medical formula's that were found in an 1898 notebook. I'm interested in knowing what some of these archaic ingredients are. Do you know of a source for this terminology? Example: (precip. chalk) another ingredient is (oil gaulth)another one is (oil tanaceti). If you know of a good source for this type of info, I'd love to hear from you. Thank you very much.

Oil of gaultheria was from the Teaberry tree grown in the USA. It contained methyl salicylate or oil of wintergreen. It was used as a flavorant or a liniment.

I looked through several old pharmacy books and couldn't find anything about oil of tanaceti. The closest one I could find was Tanacetum but that doesn't appear to be an oil.

precip. chalk is calcium carbonate the chemical that is still in use in calcium suplements and Tums.

Thanks for the questions,
